So much fun! Devon and Iris sucked me right into this story. Plenty of suspense too. I am loving getting to know the characters in this new series and their extended families. The pacing is terrific and kept me turning the pages too late into the night. I have to take it down to 4.5 stars due to a distracting mix up between a canoe and a row boat. Still, that is a small point in a story that completely entertained me otherwise. I love how these characters use inspiration and prayer to help them overcome the challenges they face. Their desire to do good and strengthen those around them melts my heart.

Feisty

A fun suspenseful romance! Bad guys, good guys, guns, danger, water, and humor. Well worth it and one I will read again.

Although this series is officially called the Mystical Lake Resort Romance Series, the title of every story in the series begins with “Only Her.” So, we could call the series “The Only Her Series.” I did not begin reading the series in sequence, having read four books in the series prior to downloading this story. That said, I believe each story can be read as a stand-alone work. However, many of the cast members and some of their backstories are contained in every story in the series. For example, our hero in this story is Devon Berkshire aka Chris Wilson. He is a supporting character in all of the other books I have read in the series. The same is true of Catalina (Cat), Iris, Stetson, Aster, Cedar, Quill, Cruz, and Allison.

I very much enjoyed reading this well-told story of Devon and Iris. Ms. Checketts had me captivated and involved in the story from start to finish and I recommend it to all my friends. I would have liked to award Ms. Checketts full five-stars as so many of my fellow reviewers have done. However, there was a scene where Devon and Iris went out to the middle of a lake so their conversation could not be overheard. In this scene, Ms. Checketts is factually incorrect when she confuses a canoe which is propelled with a paddle, and a boat which is rowed with oars. Also, when Iris stands up, had she been in a canoe, she and Devon would have definitely been in the water. But if they were in a boat, they may have avoided a wetting. Even if Ms. Checketts was confused with the difference between a canoe and a boat, her editors should have caught the error well before publication. Sorry, Ms. Checketts, you lose a star for that blunder.

Cami Checketts is one of my favorite authors for many reasons. Her characters are engaging, storyline flows, and she knows the human heart. Struggles are overcome in a positive, faith-based way. Her vocabulary is above average and I usually give her books 5 stars. The human trafficking angle was timely and earned one of the stars back from what was going to be a three star review - although I probably wouldn’t have posted because I enjoy her work too much to bring ratings down.

Warning: I am not a member of Cami’s Advanced Reader Group, but I read a lot of ARCS and am particularly attuned to typos/inconsistencies and the like. The following is really nit-picky but I need to explain why I deleted a star from my usual 5.

Iris irritated me with her “slip” of calling Devon by his real name while he was undercover and he only called her on it once. If the lapse had been significant in revealing his identity, it would have a purpose, but it is irrelevant here, so it is just sloppy or Iris is not as bright as I thought. Also, saying they were going on the lake in a canoe, then describing oars (not paddles) and leaning back on the stern was just wrong. And despite what Devon says about people not hearing them over 200 yards away (or whatever), my experience has been that sound travels on still water at night, when less ambient sound is present.

Iris and Chris/Devon

Chris is undercover trying to take out Antonio from Italy. Thankfully he isn't supposed to arrive until noon which gives him time to figure some things out. Iris is the hospitality manager and whatever else she needs to be at the Resort she manages with her cousin Cat since they are buying it from her Grams. When she goes in to clean his room, well what she doesn't expect is to have him come out of his bathroom putting on his shirt. Thankfully that is all he doesn't have on,he's fully dressed except the shirt, and my oh my what a gorgeous chest he has. What she didn't expect was his reaction to finding her in his room. She had knocked and called out "housekeeping" before opening the door plus there was no "Do not disturb" sign posted! When he gets in her space she weilds her toilet brush for protection, which they both laugh about. What happens next? Will they get to know one another? Will his assignment get there? Will Chris get what he needs to put him away? Will Iris be in danger? Only one way to find out, read this great story by Cami Checketts.

Only herUndercover Spy

Iris was a part owner of the resort at Mystical Lake along with her cousin Catalina. Devon aka Chris Wilson was a person who hired out to the government to help catch criminals, especially drug cartels or people who deal in women or young girls. Mystical Lake Resort was the place where an Italian know drug dealer who was using the resort as his home base while he scouted out a new drop off spot to transfer drugs and any other thing they were into. This book is full of suspense and intrigue with the good people finding love. This is m review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill

I love Cami Checketts books and series. This series is going to prove to be interesting if they all, and I’m sure they will, give us strong characters, interesting story lines, humor and surprises. I think I like the title Devon/Chris gives himself, security specialist, to spy. Yes, does spy but he’s really about securing the safety of his clients and others. Human trafficking is a real problem in today’s world and it was too easy for Antonio to take victims. I do love that the ladies don’t sit around wringing their hands but look for solutions. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This was an emotional story with good main characters. It's set in a sweet community of family, guests and for the most part a peaceful place. Well, until a threat invades that peaceful Resort.

I will say that I had a bit of a problem with the pace of the story. It was kind of slow at times and there was a rehashing of a couple of Iris's issues.

The story does get moving faster as things start hitting the fan with the bad guys. But the story does have a good ending with a good Epilogue.

DNF. I think this would be described as a 'cute' read... I gave up. It was... a bit boring. And the whole prayer/turning to god thing? Not for me. I am absolutely happy with a tale that is not all about sex and swearing... that is not a reading requirement for me... but, I felt that I was being preached to... and that is definitely not for me. Stopped when I was about halfway through chapter 10.

Loved this story!!!

This first characters I met in this story caught my attention so fast that I knew was going to have a hard time putting this book down. They are so different. But there are things that really make them connect. It was fun reading about the resort and his job. Their lives to date were complete opposite except for their faith. I was thrilled on this journey. Thanks!
