Introduction:
You thought Preppy was dead...you thought wrong.Samuel Clearwater, A.K.A Preppy, likes bowties, pancakes, suspenders, good friends, good times, good drugs, and a good f*ck. He s worked his way out from beneath a hellish childhood and is living the life he s always imagined for himself. When he meets a girl, a junkie on the verge of ending it all, he s torn between his feelings for her and the crippling fear that she could be the one to end the life he loves. Andrea Dre Capulet is strung out and tired. Tired of living for her next fix. Tired of doing things that make her stomach turn. Tired of looking in the mirror at the reflection of the person she s become. Just when she decides to end it all, she meets a man who will change the course of both their lives forever. And their deaths. For most people, death is the end of their story. For Preppy and Dre, death was only the beginning."

Preppy was one of my favorite characters in the ‘King’ series. If you’ve read those books, you know him and you love him #BecausePancakes. I am a long time fan of TM Frazier and I’ve read and loved all her books. That being said, I was so nervous to read this book. Because of all we learned about Preppy and the history in the other books, I couldn't tell if this book would be fantastic, or not work at all. It was a coin flip. I am so happy to report that it was FANTASTIC. I should never have doubted Tracey. I loved what she did with Preppy’s story!

Samuel Clearwater AKA Preppy hasn’t had an easy life. He had it rough growing up, but now he has his friends who are more like family, a lucrative business and his life is pretty darn good. When he meets Andrea or Dre, she is not in the same place as Preppy. She’s living with a lot of guilt. That guilt led her to drugs. She’s now strung out, doing whatever she can to chase that next high. Preppy and Dre meet in an interesting way. Even though she’s a junkie, he sees more in her.

“You want to be high? You can be high on me. You want to take the edge off? She was one of those characters that grew on me with time. She hit her rock bottom and Preppy helped bring her up. She’s tough and a fighter. As you know, I’ve always had a soft spot for Preppy. Not only is he hilarious, he’s outrageously inappropriate, damaged and loyal. Being in his head was fantastic. I laughed, I cried, I cringed and I smiled. I loved this book!

I’m so happy I started this book when I had time to read, because I read this one cover to cover. I didn’t want to put it down. Preppy’s story was so much more than I expected and I can’t wait for the next installment! Please check out more of my reviews at www.bookaddicthaven.com

If you're like me, you've been waiting for Preppy's story ever since reading the first book in the 'King' series. There is something oddly endearing about the tattooed, bow-tie wearing, drug-dealing enigma, that is Preppy. Nothing about him can be described as typical, or even appealing on it's own. However, it just seems to work. You can't help but love him.

This book begins years earlier than the other books in the series. It takes you on a trip back in time, to when King was first sent to prison. Preppy, along with Bear, were left to try and hold everything together in his absence. While managing his Granny Growhouse "start-up", Preppy focused his energy on trying to figure out a way to adopt King's child.

When one of his growhouses gets robbed, Preppy comes to the rescue of Mirna, one of his "grannies". Low and behold, it is Mirna's own granddaughter, Andrea, that unbeknownst to her, set her grandmother up to be robbed. While her junkie friends manage to sneak away, Andrea, aka "Dre", does not.

Dre is at an all-time low in her life. She's a junkie. She's suffered unspeakable acts at the hands of her supposed "friends". She's betrayed those that she loves the most, including her own grandmother. With her own actions haunting her every waking moment, she decides to end her life.

When Preppy prevents Dre from taking a dive off the top of the water tower, he is immediately drawn to the pain in her eyes. Her suffering speaks to him and he finds himself wanting to be the cause of her tears. Yet, as time passes and Dre gets clean, his feelings for her grow into much more.

These two were a train wreck right from the start. Both of them were damaged and scarred by their pasts. It was the fact that they were both so broken that actually made them perfect for each other in so many ways.

I'm not going to lie and say that this book was perfect. It definitely isn't a rainbows and unicorns type of story. It is their imperfections that define these characters and their actions...and their actions are definitely imperfect.

Toward the end, their is one scene that will put off a lot of readers. I was so angry at both Preppy and Dre - but mostly, Preppy - that I had tears in my eyes. You'll want to scream, "How could you?" At the same time, it is that exact type of emotion-invoking scene that make a book great. Man, will it make you feel!

Overall, I thought it was a great book. I am looking forward to the next part of Preppy and Dre's story. I can't wait to see how everything will come together now that the rest of this cast of characters have settled into domestic bliss. It will be interesting to see how Preppy and Dre fit in or if they can work past their issues for the long haul. I'm betting that they can.

I was/am a HUGE fan of PREPPY in earlier books, so when I heard we were going to get a couple books featuring him, I overcame my abhorrence to cliffhangers and requested an ARC.

You think you know Preppy, he's nerdy, and sexy, and crazy, but he is SO much more than that. He's damaged, and broken, and sweet. Hearing about his past will break your heart. I wanted to reach into the book and give him a huge hug. Dre was an awesome character as well. Damaged and broken in her own right. She also showed great strength and resilience. Together her and Preppy light up the pages with anger, and tension, and passion.

Miz. Frazier's writing is flawless as usual. You'll be sucked in from page one. There is A LOT of story that takes place in this (the first of two) book(s). Your emotions will be pinballing all over the place. You'll be yelling "WTF" and "OMG." You'll be taking Miz Frazier's name in vain, as you think of all sorts of diabolical ways to get her to release book two sooner.

Really all there is left to say is READ THIS BOOK.

4 Bow Ties

Was there ever really a question of whether I was going to love this book or not? I have been a Preppy super fan ever since I first read about him in King. I was trying to wait to read this book until at least the second part came out. It's obvious I failed at that, and I am so glad I did!

I am going to do my best to make this review spoiler free, because I don't want to give away too much for anyone that either hasn't read all the previous books in the series or hasn't read this book. Believe it or not, those people actually do exist. I should know, I was one of them up until recently. Thankfully, I finally decided to take the plunge, because this series has been one of my favorites of 2016.

This story is told by Preppy and Dre in dual point of view. It begins at the time when King is first locked up, and Preppy is trying to help get his kid back from the state. During the book, we also flash forward several times to the present. I liked the way the author did this, and how everything came together in the end. There is a cliffhanger, but it isn't as bad as I thought I would be. However, it did leave me dying to read the next book!

My favorite thing about every installment of this series has always been the fantastic cast of characters. This book is no exception. The author excels at making lovable characters out of men you might normally see as anything but. She also manages to throw in some pretty awesome females along the way.

Before I read this, I wondered about the type of girl that would be the perfect match for Preppy. Preppy would definitely need a woman that is a little messed up herself, that would sympathize with him instead of judge him, who wouldn't be scared off by all of his many peculiarities, not to mention, someone that would be turned on instead of repulsed by his particular sexual tastes. Andrea "Dre" Capulet, a recovering drug addict, is most certainly that woman. She was the perfect love interest for Preppy. I am so glad I didn't hate her! Lol I only want the best for my favorite morally gray hero in this series. I think that's what I got with Dre.

“The first stirring of any kind of desire in over a year comes courtesy of the devil in a bow tie.
Man, I was really fucked up.”

As far as Preppy goes, with his bow ties, tattoos, suspenders, and foul mouth, what's not to love? I had no doubt that this book would only endear him to me further, and that's exactly what it did. Preppy always brought humor and light to any scene every time he appeared in the previous books. We get all of his usual charm in this book, but also a glimpse of something more.

"My strength had always been in my amazing ability to be completely and brutally honest. Of course, the gift of honesty was in addition to my sense of humor, wit, charm, character, striking good looks, phenomenal – yet classic sense of style, and last but not least, the tribungus slab of man meat dangling between my legs. But I motherfucking digress.”

You know what they say, the ones with the biggest smiles hide the most pain. In Preppy's case, truer words have never been spoken. I was so glad that in this book we finally get to see him break down, and be vulnerable. That's not weird is it? Lol I felt like for the first time I was seeing all of him, not just what was on the surface. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the way he acts normally is phony at all. It is actually quite impressive. He really is grateful for everything and everyone he has in his life now, and doesn't want to dwell on the bad shit in the past all the time.

“Listen, life isn’t about what happened to you in your past, it’s about where you are now and where you’re going. Onward and upward and all that jazz.”

We bare witness to him doing something really disturbing and messed up in this book. One of the things I love about T.M. Frazier is that she isn't afraid to go there. A lot of authors make sure not to go too far with their broken or morally challenged heroes. They don't make them cross the line and do anything too disgusting or infuriating that might upset us or make us stop loving them. In other words, they play it safe. This author looks right at that line of safety, and then leaps right the hell over it! What Preppy does when he brings Dre back to Mirna's house is pretty freaking creepy and despicable. The thing is, Preppy is not just a "bad boy." He is a messed up, broken individual. We have been told time and time again about what a deviant he is, and we have seen him do or say some unsettling things in the past; but this showed us that behavior in a way we haven't witnessed before. We really get to see him, warts and all. In the end, I still can't help but love him. He was made into the man he is today by his demented stepfather, and he was failed and abandoned by his own mother that should have protected and cared for him.

Bear made a few appearances in this book. He's the same old Bear that we all know and love, but there is one scene with him that you may find particularly interesting toward the end of the book, if you can get over being angry at Preppy or upset about the whole situation. The other standout secondary character for me was Mirna. She is such an awesome lady, and my heart broke for her. I think T.M. Frazier must have one kick ass grandma or great aunt or something, because she writes some of the most amazing old women I have ever read about.

Preppy: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater, Part One was another spectacular addition to the King series. The story was alluring, illuminating, gritty, and heartbreaking. The characters are raw and complex. The writing is captivating, expressive, and as always, will make you FEEL above all else. I highly recommend it to fans of the series, and readers that don't mind a little darkness in their romance. If you haven't started this series and you think it might be something you would like, please rectify that immediately!

I will glare at you until you finish the next book. I will wave my fists menacingly and look as threatening as I can while doing it to make sure that you do all of this right this very second. You hear me? You can't leave me like that! You just can't!! GAH!

Have you ever read a secondary character that was so vivid and so enigmatic that he almost stole the show? I loved his warped humor and the way that he was always making everyone around him laugh even with his warped past and his not so pretty present. This is a man that has seen hell and came out with a smile on his face and a bow tie on his neck. I was beyond thrilled to get his book.

Preppy takes us back before the timeline of King began. Speaking of King, I highly recommend reading this series in order to truly appreciate everything that is Preppy. While plenty of background is given, a lot could be lost on you having not read the previous books.

It made sense that his body was built for sin, because the hold Samuel Clearwater had over me was something straight from the depths of hell.

Andrea ‘Dre’ Capulet is at the end of her rope. I’m always sometimes joking in a way that’s honest.” “Totally cleared that up.” “Glad I could help...”

Dre was an interisting character to say the least. It's not everyday you can read about an addict like that and yet feel an odd sort of...kinship to her. She should be desperate and weak considering her circumstances, but even though all that there was this sense of a steel backbone to her. An underlying strength that would make an appearance to show that not everything is as it seems. I loved the way that the author was able to convey that without taking away from her addiction. This wasn't someone that was magically healed and never wanted drugs again because she met a man. She was broken but not ruined.

He’d said he couldn’t keep me. Frazier" rel="noopener">Soulless. It will answer many questions about Preppy while leaving you with plenty more. It was a gritty, sexy, dirty, violent ride that I never wanted to end. Re-read update: STILL so very good. Couldn't put it down even when I knew everything that was going to happen!

4.5 Stars. Let me start off by saying that this is not a "safe" read no matter which way you slice it. Prep is messed up in ways that go beyond any hero I've ever read. I've got to commend Ms. Frazier for standing at the proverbial line, looking down, laughing, and flipping it off before skipping over it merrily lol I'll be honest in saying that Prep's proclivities had me dealing with a mix of apprehensive curiosity and unease. He took me out of my comfort zone and didn't fit into any box I've ever built in my mind about what a hero is. Despite my own perceived limits, I couldn't pull myself away from trying to figure out this deeply flawed complex hero. Then we get introduced to Dre and her story is just emotionally heart-wrenching. At the sunset of what she's been through and the spiral her life has taken is this glimpse of the woman she could be or perhaps once was. That part of her really resonated with Prep and brought out something in him that I needed to experience. There are some pretty darn special dimensions to him, her, and both of them together that made the leap worth it. Does the story have it's flaws? Yes. The plot is a little confusing with some jumps that leave many questions that I'm hoping will get answered next book. Additionally, Prep does something that is simply not ok. Not going to excuse it. The story is raw and unfiltered. It doesn't ask permission and it doesn't make excuses. I was hooked from beginning to end. Safety: There is sexual contact without penetration without consent. There is rape and physical/emotional abuse. Very graphic and trigger inducing.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Currently FREE
Amazon US * Amazon UK

This is clearly a case of it's me not you. I think I got my expectations up way too high before starting this and then disappointed myself. Just like everyone else I loved Preppy from the first time we met him in King. He's a character that is impossible to ignore and not many people would want to. So when I started this and was looking for way more of his insanity it was sad to see that there didn't seem to be much of it. Sure he was still cuckoo bananas, and we got to see his dark side, but it seemed to be toned down.

That doesn't mean I didn't like Preppy because, of course, I still loved him in all his bow tie glory. And I enjoyed that we got to see just how insane he could be when he let his dark side show. He may be colorful, wears a bow tie, and has a penchant for long conversations about absolute nonsense, but underneath all of that he's a man you should be scared of. There's a reason he hangs with King and Bear, after all.

"Upon first glance, the guy was about as scary as the Easter Bunny. Until I saw IT."

Andrea aka Dre aka Doc was nothing more than a junkie looking for her next fix or a way to end it all. Until Preppy showed up and saved her from herself. He gave her a way out of her life of destruction and then planned to go on his own way. But there was something about her bruised and bloodied body that he couldn't ignore. And don't think that it was him wanting to fix her, it was him wanting to see more of those bruises, more of that fearful look she had on her face. So he decided she wasn't going anywhere but with him.

Preppy's story is told in dual perspectives and mostly in the past, with only some parts of the present. It starts three years earlier to where the last book left off and by the end you're left off in the present with tons more questions. I think that was one of my main problems with this book. I knew it was going to end on a cliffhanger and I was fully prepared for that. But I thought we would at least get some answers to the million questions swirling around my head. Instead I felt left in the dark even more and I needed at least hints of what was to come in order for my interest to be held.

Did I like Dre and Preppy's story? Definitely. But I wanted more feelings and emotions to come from it. I knew Preppy had a very dark soul, and I was looking forward to getting that part of him that's hidden behind that cheerful guy he looks like. For me, it didn't happen though. I felt as if we were told that he was a crazy and dark person but not shown. Sure he killed people and he lusted after Dre's pain but there was never a moment that I sat back and though "Fuck this guy is insane." We did get to explore that dark side more and I enjoyed it, just wanted more of it to be fully satisfied.

I plan on doing a re-read of this when the second book is out and maybe reading them together, when I can get my answers, will change my feelings on this book. I know my too-high expectations were a big factor in me not enjoying this as much as I wanted too, so I'm not going to make the same mistake for Part Two.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

He is the ultimate friend to have to lighten any mood but trust to have your back and take care of business. He was such a contradiction and the only explanation is that he's Preppy.

Dre was not who I was expecting for Preppy, but they make perfect sense together.
