This is the sequel to The Christmas Eve Letter. While this book stands on its own, it does reference how Eve and Patrick get together and other incidents, so I highly suggest reading that book first before delving into this novel.

Time Travel is very intriguing and I wonder how I would handle situations if I found myself tossed back in time. Probably not as well as Eve seems to handle all the situations put in her path plus being in a time that she is not as familiar. I know I am not a history buff, so trying to know what will happen and when would be hard for me to adapt.

Eve and Patrick are married and doing an internet search reveals that Patrick has a daughter he never knew. He already feels out of sorts being 130 years in the future, but to find out you had a child that dies by nefarious means is too much for him to take. He insists on going back to save his daughter one way or another. Of course, he thinks he can do it on his own. He should know better being married to Eve that she is not going to let that happen. Thus begins their journey.

It is interesting how they travel back and forth in time - through a lantern. The fact that this lantern does not travel with them is interesting. It does make for a good story because Eve and Patrick have to track down what happened to the lantern from when they left in 1885. They are lucky that the lantern was recoverable but not without a lot of effort.

I enjoyed the new characters, an update on characters from the first book, and the possibility for more books because there are some characters that are mentioned but we don't know what happened to them. I can't spoil the story, but let's just say that things changed from when Patrick & Eve left to when they returned and these were pretty major changes.

if you enjoy time travel themed novels you will like these books!

The Christmas Eve Daughter by Elyse Douglas is the most delightful timeslip novel and the second book in A Time Travel Novel series. I would recommend reading The Christmas Eve Letter, book one first as you will receive the back story.
Once more the reader follows Patrick and Eve as they undertake a search and rescue mission. The pair are transported from present day to 1914. The reader becomes totally immersed in a bygone age – an age where horse-drawn carriages are more popular than horse power vehicles.
With a December setting the snow adds to the atmosphere, giving a nostalgic and romantic feel to the novel. In reality New York City was a precarious place to be in 1914. There is huge poverty and a wide gap between rich and poor. People are vulnerable as thugs traverse the city.
In 1914 women had few rights. They are seen to be subservient to men. Those who break traditional moulds, especially actresses are seen as scandalous.
Once more Elyse Douglas has enchanted me with her characters and plotline which was intriguing and exciting. I am loving Elyse Douglas’ style of writing and I want more, more, more.
The Christmas Eve Daughter is a time travel novel that continues the story from The Christmas Eve Letter. I thought it was pretty good. It has some unexpected events which kept me intrigued until the end.
I am giving The Christmas Eve Daughter four and a half stars. I have read The Christmas Eve Letter but am planning to in the near future. If a reader enjoys time travel stories, then this one would be for them. I recommend it.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Awesome read

I love the idea of time travel and these books are wonderful reads. I also like the idea of changing that and thereby changing the future. Can't wait to read Book 3 in this series and wonder where the later will take them on their next adventure.

Marvelous

I was a Christmas Eve bride and I adore time travel stories. I quickly became invested in the main characters romance and cried at spots during reading it. An excellent book.

The second in the series, this novel continues the story of Eve and her husband Patrick. While living in the present day, Patrick discovers something so upsetting that he and Eve travel back to the past to try and save a life. Things go awry from the very start, when they become separated during the return to 1885. They endeavor to save Patrick’s daughter from being murdered, even as they search for the lantern that will return them to the future. This is quite a well written series on time travel. The characters are real and the storyline is engrossing. The author does an excellent job of explaining time travel and sticks to the frameworks of the explanation. Even when things don’t work out, there is a reason behind it that will become evident. Recommended for readers who want something out of the ordinary.

I love time traveling books and Xmas books so this was one I had to check out. Plus, I adore that cover. Lovely!

I did not read book 1, but that is okay. This did well as a standalone. There was some backstory missed, but the author did a good job of getting the reader up-to-speed and knowing as much as needed.

This follows Patrick and Eve who have just gotten married. He is from 1885 and she is from today. They met in the previous book. Patrick is trying to get used to this modern world. There are things he likes and things he hates. It is rough for him which is understandable. It becomes rougher when he finds out he has a daughter with a one-night stand who met with a horrible fate. He is filled with guilt and wants to go back and change this and save his daughter. Poor guy. Things happen and our character finds themselves going back in time. But of course...things do not go to plan.

Oooo Patrick. Poor guy. I can't imagine this happening. I would do the same thing and as much as I want to see it from Eve's point of view...I found her pretty selfish at first. Yes, yes, it is a lot to ask for to time travel and whatnot, but he will never be happy knowing he could possibly change history and save his child.

That lantern is a pain. They need to figure out the science behind it because it seems so unreliable. I guess this keeps people from running around all of the time doing whatever they please. Maybe a future book someone will be able to explain it so it came to be used so we avoid these issues ;)

I enjoyed this quite a bit. It was a fun adventure and I was not sure what was going to happen next. I had no idea how anything was going to be fixed. Time travel is such a messy thing for sure! And the author did a good job with showing this. The characters were fun too! I loved the dynamic between Patrick and Eve. They were cute. I'm a little bummed I missed book 1. I may have to backtrack to see them fall in love...

The scene when Eve first arrives bugged me. It seemed a touch unrealistic honestly. It was fun and I liked the friend she meets when she first gets there, but she was WAY too trusting. Other than that, no issues. This was a good one overall.

All-in-all, I enjoyed this quite a bit. The characters were fun and I was worried about Patrick and Eve. I am most impressed that this did so well as a stand-alone novel. Kuddos to the author for that! If you are looking for a good Xmas book with time travel give this a go. I'll stamp it this with 4 stars.

Elyse Douglas - The Christmas Eve Series Bk 2 - The Christmas Eve Daughter - Reviewed 8/9/19
Even the best-laid plans sometimes never come together… time travel has a mind of its own…

Time travelers Eve and Patrick Gantly, are settling into life and marriage. Patrick has learned to use the laptop to search for information about people that he knew back in 1885. He comes across something that throws him into a loop…. A secret that he has not even told his beloved Eve. Together they decide to go back to 1885 and save the daughter he never knew about from a disastrous life. After the hell that Eve went through the first time, they try to figure all the odds and make plans. Even the best-laid plans sometimes never come together and when they land in the past they are separated in the wrong year. They finally unite and fight to save Patrick’s daughter and return home.

What did I like? I just finished the first book of “The Christmas Eve Letter” Series and loved it. This one is even better. What’s even better yet is that in September book three will be released “The Christmas Eve Secret” When I read the first book I thought what could be better and here again, I am astonished. This one is so exciting and amazing. With all of their plans blown apart, Eve struggles just to stay on course and save Patrick’s daughter even when they find each other nothing goes like they thought it would.

What will you like? Amazing, remarkable, wonderful, marvelous, astounding, and incredible are just a few of the adjectives that I would use to describe this book. Fast-paced and filled with so much action, from murder, car chases, and kidnapping things are exciting and never a dull moment throughout the book. When you think you have planned for everything the most common things throw monkey wrenches into the works. Who would have thought about women not being able to do anything on their own? 1914 and women still had to have a man to back up anything that they did, even cash a check!!! It’s the little details that make this series as good as it is. The author’s research is evident on every page. Awesome read and can’t wait for the next book to be released. I borrowed this from Kindle Unlimited.
Some spoilers for The Christmas Eve Daughter.

Okay, so a couple of things about me. I’m a completist when I can stand to be one, I’m a glutton for punishment, and I like tradition. I save my holiday themed books for December and try to get in the spirit. I read The Christmas Eve letter last year and found it wanting. The forced formalness between the characters and excess descriptions were difficult to wade through, the characters weren’t very well fleshed out, and to be honest, I think there was one tree in it.

One year later, I’m back for more.

There was less opportunity for the level of formalness we got in the last book, but this book did try with Eve’s nickname for Patrick of Detective Patrick Gantry. Or Detective Sergeant Patrick Gantry. I’m doing this from memory, although the phrase “Mr. Albert Harringshaw” still comes to memory from last year so perhaps it’s okay that I don’t quite remember from last week.

The characters this time didn’t jump out at me much in either direction, with a single exception. I was excited to see Ann again, and hoped she might return to the future or inject something into the story, but she seemed to really go nowhere. I found myself wondering how she would handle the death of her son. Perhaps she didn’t live long enough to see, but I wish I knew.

Irene, on the other hand, drove me batty from the beginning. That forced formalness I can’t stand was in full force from her, and the story makes an interesting pivot to make it just that Irene is a truly annoying person. Eve can’t seem to stand her half the time, and while her boyfriend seemed quite attached to her and while she seemed helpful off the pages, the other characters seemed to want her gone as quickly as possible, so it was bizarre that I was forced to read about her in the first place. She wasn’t a character I loved to hate. She was just annoying.

Big Jim, the clear villain of this piece, was too one-note, as we references to him from the other characters such as “the bad man.”

The ending left me scratching my head. I know the first book ended with changes to the prime timeline upon return, and that happened again here, but we’re not left with explanation for why this particular change happened, or any real resolution to it. A door was slammed and that was it.

I see now that a third book has come out in this series. See you all in December 2020. I can’t help myself.

Whenever you pick up a time travel novel you automatically have to suspend belief ’cause, time travel. That doesn’t mean that everything real has to go out the window. You still need believable characters and the rest of the plot has to read true. You want to be invested in the characters and what is going on around them.

I did not read the story that preceded this, The Christmas Eve Letter. I don’t think it’s going to be a problem though, any bits that need explanation are smoothly written into the tale. The reader easily learns how and why Eve is able to time travel and how she met her 19th century husband Patrick, and brought him back to the present.

In this tale Patrick has been researching his family – after slowly adjusting to 21st century life. He discovers that he had a daughter back in his time that he knew nothing about. He also learns that she dies by murder. The thought of this invades his consciousness and does not let him rest. He needs to go back in time and warn her. Eve warns that changing time can be a very dangerous thing but he is insistent. So back in time they go – only to be separated. Will they find their way back to each other?

This was a highly engaging read that kept me happily distracted for a long drive. The authors have that knack of drawing you into their world so as a reader you feel fully immersed. The characters are fully realized and are not all just iterations of the same type. The worlds – both past and present – are alive and as you read you feel like you’re inhabiting them with the characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed traveling through time with Eve and Patrick as they try to a.) save Patrick’s daughter from her murderer b.) try to reconnect and c.) try to get back to the present. There are a lot of twists and turns as this couple out of time tries to tread lightly upon the past so as to not upend the future.
