I loved The Last Kids on Earth. I would always present the story as "Wimpy Kid meets The Walking Dead, and I guess the authors heard me, because the second book is basically that - a parade of zombies drawn to a certain area along with a villainous monster working against the kids. This story continues to be a fun, madcap tale, and I'd go as far to say the second book is even better than the first. It's just a ton of readable fun, and I can't wait for the next installment. Very well done as usual.

A wonderful sequel to the first book! Giggles, zombies, monsters, pizza, what could you possibly want more? :P

The book jumps right into the action with the Wormungulous and from there on it is a non-stop ride through this world. A world that now also has other monsters in it, monsters that might not actually be willing to kill, but are actually happy to have a new, safer, world to stay in. I really loved their addition, it was so much fun that we didn't only have brainless monsters, but instead had some guys we could form alliances with.

I do have to say that I was fooled with who the baddy was in the group. I thought it was x, but instead it was y! Luckily, very luckily I wasn't the only one who was fooled, everyone was fooled by that character! Yay! Well, OK, not yay, but you get why I am yaying, I am not alone! :)

This time we have some zombies that are disappearing for no reason, they are being lured to something, in massive hordes while listening to some shrieking sound. On the one hand, I didn't mind that the zombies were leaving, but on the other hand I was worried something worse would happen. I mean, there must be something huge that causes the zombies to disappear and I don't want to meet it.

I also loved that we found out more and more about the world as it is now. We find out how things got so messed up, and also about a big, creepy, giant boss that is lurking around somewhere.

Next to all the monsters we also have the story part in which Jack learns to trust his friends more, that while he is afraid to lose them, he shouldn't lock them up to keep them safe. I really loved that this was added, it gave depth to Jack (though he is still an idiot at times), but also added a new dimension to the story. It made it a bit more real (yes, I know this is all fiction, but I do hope you get what I mean).

I have to give extra credit points to Dirk. It is just so much fun how tough he looks, but then he wants to make a garden. He also knows how to sew, and I just laughed so hard. Tough guy with a soft heart inside.

Of course the book is also still filled with illustrations, and they made the story oh so much more fun. I just loved seeing all the monsters, see all the adventures.

The ending was terrific, but it didn't feel like a cliffhanger. It did leave stuff open for the next book, so I am really excited about that.

One thing I would like is seeing more humans, other humans. I wish they would go search for other humans, I am sure there must be others who also survived. I want to hear about their stories. See how they survived.

All in all, I really loved this book, and I can't wait for the next book. Can't wait to see what is happening in there, will it be the end? Will there be more books?

Would I recommend this book? Yes, yes I would.

Review first posted at https://twirlingbookprincess.com/

"Friends are important. Family is important. Maybe the most important thing. But even a post-apocalyptic action hero can't keep them safe all the time."

These books are great. It was so fun to watch Jack grow through this second book. In the first, he learned June wasn't a damsel in distress. In this one, he realized that he couldn't do everything, that he couldn't save everyone, and that his friends could feel like Jack doubted them when he wouldn't let them do the dangerous things.

One thing I didn't like so much about this book compared to the first one was that it didn't seem like the creators spent as much time aligning all the pictures with the text. Like, some of the images didn't add commentary to the story, just an image, or they repeated something already said and the picture would have been better off a couple paragraphs earlier. But I'm not complaining too hard because I can't imagine how difficult it would be to do some of that mapping. Think about it. You have everything in place. You go through the draft and revise something. Whelp, now all the pictures don't match up just right and are trying to go on different pages. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

A great thing this book did that I didn't notice so much in the first one was the use of Chekhov's Gun - the thing in theater where if a gun is placed on the stage in an act, then the gun must be used by the end of that act. So essentially, everything included must be used and have a purpose. This book did that. There were so many little things, down to Quint going ham building monster-attack weapons, that had a purpose later.

I thought the action at the end was a little drawn out - like the plot tried to have that intense climax for the last 80 pages of the book. I got that intense feeling for maybe 30 pages, but couldn't hold onto it anymore. The average middle school reader doesn't consume 80 pages in one sitting. They have a shorter attention span than I do, and I was getting tired of the action. So maybe the ending should have been a little tighter, but overall, good stuff.

With his new team and beast pet by his side, Jack is able to continue his survival. Many surprises await for them which include monster warriors, a giant worm and an unexpected occurrence with the zombies. Another great read with the same thrills as the first, but with a few new things. A- (91%/Excellent)

“Book number one didn’t have so many monsters, but this book (number 2) had lots of monsters, that’s why I liked it. “

Review from my 9 year old.

I love listening to this series. The narrator, Robbie Daymond, does such a good job bringing the stories to life. Daymond really brings out the humor and zany adventures! Zombie Parade is the 2nd book in this series. The stories build on each other, so it's pretty important to read/listen to them in order. But at an average of about 5 hours per story....it's not hard to work through this series in a short amount of time. Great listening entertainment for kids...and adults!

I enjoyed listening to the newest tale of the monster-pocalypse while commuting to work and working in my yard. I love the humor and fun in these stories. The characters are awesome, the humor is zany and the plots are just fun! This is a great action series for kids. Nothing age inappropriate, some slightly gross monsters to battle, and a great group of kids facing a new, much more slimy world with great ingenuity.

Very entertaining! I'm moving on to book 3 -- The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King! This series has been made into a show for Netflix. Now that I've read through the second book, I'm going to start watching! Book 1 was the show's first season. Season 2 coming April 17th, 2020. I hope the series is as fun as the books!

Read this aloud to Andrew in THREE sittings. Any book that can hold my 8 year old's attention. Like that, is a winner.
